The Experience Machine

We discover a civilisation in which people spend their lives plugged into virtual reality machines...

In the world depicted in this film, people can enter simulated realities of their choosing by plugging into an 'Experience Machine', which affords thoroughly convincing sensory experiences. The film encourages children to reflect on the benefits and drawbacks of using such a machine. The film can be used to stimulate enquiries about the nature of reality and perception and the value of authenticity.

Inspired by Peter Worley’s talk The If Machine, based on Robert Nozick’s famous thought experiment ‘The Experience Machine’.

The Big Questions program is an initiative of The Philosophy Club and the films were created for Big Questions by David Urbinder.  Please contact The Philosophy Club for further information or to request a non-watermarked version of the films for educational use.
